Adlam handwriting: right-to-left joins, casing, and vowel marks
Build an Adlam routine around optional cursive joining, uppercase and lowercase forms, vowel lengtheners, and prenasalisation marks.

Start Adlam from right to left
Unicode describes Adlam as a casing script with right-to-left directionality. That gives the first practice session an immediate rule: begin the line on the right, keep the interface's direction from reversing the model, and review the sequence in the direction a reader will use. Adlam is not Arabic, even though both are written right to left; learn the Adlam letterforms and joining behaviour from an Adlam source.
Write a small set of uppercase and lowercase pairs with a clear baseline. Do not mirror a left-to-right chart or practise the forms in an English order without a reason. Direction is part of movement, spacing, and line planning, not a cosmetic property of the page.
Joining can be optional and contextual
Adlam letters can be cursively joined or unjoined, depending on context and user choice. In a cursive context, Unicode describes joining forms for letters that connect to neighbours. This gives the learner two related targets: isolated recognition and a connected line. Do not treat the connected form as a new letter; keep the base identity visible while learning how the join changes its silhouette.
Practise one pair in isolation, then write it at the beginning, middle, and end of a short sourced sequence if your model provides those forms. Review the connection before polishing the letter. A good join should preserve recognition and a steady right-to-left rhythm.
Keep vowel lengtheners attached to the right letter
Adlam uses diacritics to lengthen vowels, and Unicode documents different lengtheners for particular vowel contexts. These marks can change the shape above a capital letter and can be easy to lose when the line is written too small. Learn the base vowel first, then add one lengthener with a sourced example.
Write the complete unit from right to left and check that the mark remains attached to the intended letter. Do not practise a floating mark as if it carried a sound by itself. The mark's function depends on the base and the language spelling.

Prenasalisation is a language-specific contrast
Unicode describes the Adlam nasalization mark as a way to clarify prenasalized consonants, especially where the letter nun could otherwise be read as a syllable-final n followed by another consonant. This is a good example of script mechanics answering a language problem. The learner should copy a sourced word and keep the pronunciation or translation beside it.
Compare a marked and unmarked sequence only when the language source establishes the contrast. Write the mark large, then at ordinary size, and review whether it remains visible without breaking the cursive connection. A plausible-looking string is not enough evidence for a prenasalization rule.
A six-pass Adlam routine
Pass one: identify direction and case. Pass two: write isolated letters. Pass three: pair uppercase and lowercase forms. Pass four: practise one optional join. Pass five: add a vowel lengthener or nasalization mark from a sourced word. Pass six: hide the model and retrieve the short line right to left.
Review the line from the reader's direction first, then the letter skeletons, then the marks and joins. If the direction reverses, stop and rebuild the line from the right edge. If a mark disappears, enlarge the written unit before increasing speed.
Keep Adlam separate from Arabic and Latin aids
Adlam has been designed for Fulani and other African languages and has its own letters, marks, and conventions. Arabic transliteration or Latin translation may help the learner understand a word, but neither line is a substitute for the Adlam written form. Keep all three labelled when they appear together.
This separation also protects the page from false visual comparisons. A right-to-left interface does not make every RTL script the same, and a familiar Latin letter does not supply an Adlam sound. Let the target language source decide the reading.
Finish with a connected line
Choose a short sourced Adlam word or phrase, write it with joins visible, and rewrite it after a delay. Check the direction, letter identity, join continuity, and mark placement in that order. A line can be technically right-to-left yet still be difficult to read if the joins have swallowed a letter or a mark has drifted.
Keep a note of the first feature that failed. That note should guide the next practice set: isolated form, case pair, joining position, lengthener, or nasalization. A narrow repair is more effective than copying the whole alphabet again.
